How Places Affect Identity

Place, the fourth theme of geography as defined by the Geographical Educational National Implementation Project, is the uniqueness of a location. Usually, places are heavily affected by the culture of the residing residents. The culture embedded within a particular creates a sense of place for a person, which is the state of mind derived through the infusion of a place with meaning and emotion by remembering important events that occurred in that place or by labeling a place with a certain character. Also, a division in neighborhoods are created because of the clashing culture. This has led to residential segregation. There may be an uneven number of representation within a neighborhood. Also, some neighborhoods are barrionized , which endangers the residents' culture.
